RAF to send teams to tournament in aid of Help for Heroes charity

An open golf day with teams entering from the RAF is to be held at a club in Baildon to raise funds for wounded servicemen and women.

Baildon Golf Club will host the tournament on Friday, August 7, in support of forces charity Help for Heroes. The village was the home of Sapper Jordan Rossi, 22, who served in the Royal Engineers and died in an explosion in southern Afghanistan on May 23.

Golf club captain Robert Kennedy, who chose Help for Heroes as the club’s charity for 2009, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a great cause, and the charity’s close to home for the people of Baildon.”

Club member Squadron Leader Damian Townsend, of the Air Warfare Centre at RAF Waddington, has lent his support to the event, organising ten RAF teams for the tournament.

Mr Kennedy also hoped there would be a fly-past by the Red Arrows. He said: “The most important thing is to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes. All the money raised will be going to the charity.”

There are 15 tee times, out of a total of 40, left for the event which will run from 8am to 3pm. Teams may be mixed and must have four players. Entry costs £60 per team. To enter or donate prizes for the tournament, call the club on (01274) 582644.

Help for Heroes was started in 2007 to provide support for wounded servicemen and women returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Three British soldiers were killed in Afghanistan over the weekend.

Their deaths follow those of Lt Col Rupert Thornelow, 39, the most senior Army officer to be killed in action since the Falklands War in 1982, and Trooper Joshua Hammond, 18. A total of 174 UK service personnel have died in Afghanistan since operations started in 2001.
