THE co-leader of the Green Party will be ‘headlining’ a night of politics and music in Saltaire.

After Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn appeared at Glastonbury this summer, the Green Party’s Caroline Lucas will be coming to Victoria Hall on September 1, where a ‘night of politics, entertainment and curry’ is planned.

Earlier that day, Ms Lucas will also be meeting members of a community campaign raising money to install solar panels at a local primary school.

Environmental campaigners have got together with staff and governors at Glenaire Primary School in Baildon to help the school cut its electricity bills while also inspiring children to think about renewable energy.

The new charitable trust, known as the Run on Sun Fund, has already raised enough to fit three solar panels - the bare minimum needed for the project to be viable.

But they hope to scale up the project and make the school a beacon of energy efficiency.

Green Party councillor for Shipley, Hawarun Hussain, said: “We invited Caroline to our ward to show her the great work being done in Shipley to tackle the much larger problem of climate change.

“A great example of this is the Run On Sun Fund who are raising funds to pay for solar panels on the roof of Glenaire School.”

Ms Lucas is expected to meet senior school staff and John Anderson, a member of Friends of the Earth, who came up with the idea.

Professor Glyn Turton, a member of the committee, said they were “delighted” Ms Lucas was paying them a visit.

He said: “Although both the Fund itself and Friends of the Earth are apolitical, we work hard to draw our project to the attention of all public figures who take a positive interest in renewable energy particularly when it is of direct benefit to young people.

“The visit of a leading figure in the environmental movement such as Caroline Lucas is a major boost to our morale as we work to raise funds.

“It is also a measure of how a local scheme such as the Glenaire project is very clearly recognised as part of the world-wide effort to tackle climate change.”

The event at Victoria Hall, organised by the Bradford District Green Party, will see Ms Lucas speak about her experiences as the first and only Green MP in Parliament and take part in a question-and-answer session.

Live music will be provided by Leeds-based The Hill Bandits and Silsden-based folk acts Janet Russell and Jim Woodlands. Trevor Organ, Sultan of Spin, will provide comedy.

Tickets, at £12.50, including a bowl of curry, are available at carolinelucassaltaire.eventbrite.co.uk.
