VOLUNTEERS are wanted to help re-start a community group to look after a beauty spot in Baildon.

The Friends of Ferniehurst Dell are looking for new members to help with the maintenance of the area.

The group, which will re-launch next month, is looking for people with skills including gardening, fundraising, design and DIY to sign up.

Baildon town councillor Joe Ashton, acting chairman of the Friends of Ferniehurst Dell, said: “It is a refuge in an otherwise urban area.

“We are not in a crisis of membership, but it needs to be done now as it could fold in the future.

“Membership of our group has dwindled over recent years. We are seeing who is interested in joining us now. We will manage with whatever membership numbers we get.

“It is one of the biggest public spaces in the town. It’s Baildon’s park.”

The Dell, a sunken woodland garden which is located in an old quarry beneath the playing fields, was originally bought and run by Baildon Urban District Council in the 1940s, before transferring to Bradford Council in 1974.

It includes a woodland recreation area, two football pitches, tennis courts and a bowling green. The Baildon Road site is owned and managed by Bradford Council and is also home to the Yorkshire Armed Forces Sculpture Trail, which opened on Armed Forces Day in 2014 and features a number of sculptures by different artists and in different media.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment, sport and culture, said: “We fully support the work that the Friends of Ferniehurst Dell do to keep this beauty spot looking lovely.

“Many of our parks have friends groups whose work is invaluable in helping maintain these recreational areas.”
