A PROJECT that prevents tonnes of food being sent to landfill may be prosecuted for selling out of date food after inspectors visited its Pudsey warehouse.

The Real Junk Food Project intercepts food that shops or traders would otherwise throw out and uses it in restaurants and cafes.

The Saltaire Canteen is one of the places that works with the group, as do 12 Bradford Primary Schools.

Adam Smith, director of the project, has received a formal summons from West Yorkshire Shared Services Trading Standards, and will be interviewed tomorrow.

It relates to a visit to the warehouse where inspectors say they found 444 items past their use-by-date.

Duncan Milwain, from Saltaire Canteen, said there will be a “peaceful picnic” outside Trading Standards offices in Morley tomorrow as Mr Smith is being interviewed as a sign of support.

He said there have never been reports of customers getting ill from the food served in cafes related to the Real Junk Food Project.
