VOLUNTEERS are being urged to get behind a village-wide clean-up at Oakworth.

The event, on March 18, is the latest in a series of litter-busting community ventures.

Seven clean-ups, attended by hundreds of volunteers, have now been held at Oakworth over the past 18 months.

As part of the latest Operation Oakworth initiative, residents are being invited to nominate 'grot spots' and then help clear them up.

Running alongside will be Perk up your Park –in Holden Park – which will include litter-picking, planting and completion of repainting of the youth shelter.

Both events start at 10am.

Volunteers can meet at Christchurch, in Colne Road – where Bradford Council neighbourhood service staff will provide litter-pickers, bags, high-visibility vests and gloves – or at Holden Park bowling hut, where community development worker Pip Gibson will join Friends of Holden Park members and other helpers.

Andrew Wiseman, secretary of the park Friends, urges people to go along.

"Come down and give us a hand if you've got a bit of spare time," he said.

"There's painting to be done and we've got quite a few perennials, sponsored by Keighley Town Council, to plant."

Free refreshments will be provided by Oakworth Co-op.

In support of the campaign, Bradford Council has installed a solar-powered 'Big Belly' bin – which has nine times the capacity of a traditional litter bin – in Station Road.
