A PARCEL delivery company is planning to close its Keighley depot, putting 45 jobs at risk.

Yodel confirmed that it is proposing to shut the site at Keighley Industrial Park, in Royd Ings Avenue.

The firm said the proposed move was part of a “continuing drive to improve operational efficiency”.

In a statement released yesterday, a Yodel spokesman said: “We recognise that the type of change proposed is not easy and we are consulting with employees and the relevant trade unions.

“Currently the site employs 45 people. Wherever possible we will offer roles in other parts of our network and we’ll also be offering outplacement workshops and Job Centre engagement as further support in finding new opportunities.”

Meanwhile community leaders and councillors from the town said they hoped the staff affected would be supported while the consultation took place.

Keighley Central councillor Zafar Ali (Con) described the proposed closure of the depot as a huge blow for employees and the town.

And he hoped the company could find a way of retaining a presence in Keighley, despite its announcement.

“I feel for the employees and their families – 45 jobs are a lot and it will impact on many people,” said Cllr Ali.

“I hope every support is given to those affected.

“This is also extremely sad news for the town and something it just does not need.

“During the consultation I would hope that perhaps a way could be found for the company to change its plans.”

Yodel, which is based in Liverpool, delivers millions of parcels every week across the UK and operates more than 55 service centres.

Customers cover sectors ranging from fashion, leisure, health and beauty and home and garden to electrical and industrial components.
