Detectives are hunting for a 4x4 vehicle after shots were fired in a residential street.

A white Nissan panel van was damaged in the incident in Milner Road, Baildon, at around 11.35pm yesterday.

Neighbours say the owner of the van is well-known in the area and reported hearing gun shots and screeching tyres.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said enquiries were at an early stage, but officers would like to speak to anyone who saw a red or burgundy 4x4 style vehicle in the area.

This car is believed to have been involved in a crash with a Vauxhall Astra in Dockfield Road, Shipley, a short time later.

The people in the Astra attended hospital for treatment, but were later released.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Today, a large part of Milner Road was cordoned off, with the right-hand fork of the dead-end street closed off to traffic.

A white van could be seen parked up within the cordon with a side panel riddled with small black marks.

Officers were taking pictures and examining the vehicle, as well as other cars in the street.

Crime scene investigation and scientific support vans were also in attendance, with evidence markers laid out in the road leading up to where the van was parked.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said they had been in bed last night when they heard a commotion outside.

“I heard three bangs, and then the sound of a car screaming off,” he said.

“They sounded like gun shots, but I didn’t go outside to have a look.

“You hear car noises all the time, but its the first shooting there has been here, as far as I know.”

Another resident, who said they had lived on the street for more than 40 years, said: “I was reading in bed, and I heard a sound like pop, pop, pop.

“There was then a noise of what sounded like a car backing up, it was there and then gone.

“I didn’t hear any shouting or anything.

“The police arrived and they have been here all night.”

Neighbours said the owner of the damaged van was well-known in the area.
