RESIDENTS have complained after rubbish including a television and sewing machine was dumped in the middle of a road in Shipley.

Jamie Nichols, 26, said he saw a white van being reversed down Baker Street and its contents being dumped on the road.

A pile including a large flat-screen television, rolls of used floor vinyl, wooden chairs and even a sewing machine was dumped at around 11pm last night.

Large, opened paint pots were also dumped on the street, with paint dripping out of them.

Cars were forced to drive round the items in the difficult snowy conditions yesterday.

A Bradford Council spokesman confirmed the flytipping had been removed from the road this morning.

Mr Nichols, of Baker Street, condemned the van driver’s actions.

He said: “I heard a skidding noise.

“A white van reversed down the road and had its back doors open. It took them two goes to empty it out.

“There were cars trying to get round it.

“It’s a disgrace, this is a nice area. It was an eyesore.”

Mr Nichols’ neighbour, Lyn Murgatroyd, 68, also condemned the flytipping.

She said: “It’s disgraceful.

“It was a massive pile of rubbish. Somebody could have had an accident.”

Cllr Martin Love (Green Party, Shipley) echoed the residents’ views.

He said: “It is disgusting that these people can do something like this.

“I really wish the council had powers to inflict higher fines than it does.”

A council spokesman urged residents to report any incidents of flytipping they witnessed.

He said: “If flytipping has been reported to Bradford Council it will be dealt with appropriately.

“We will arrange removal if on council land, or work with the landowner if on private land.

“In the next five weeks Bradford Council is taking 15 people to court in relation to flytipping offences.

“If you see flytipping taking place, please note down as many details as possible, including vehicle licence plate numbers, and inform the council.

“Flytipping is a criminal offence and the incident will be investigated by the Environmental Enforcement Team to identify those responsible.”

To report flytipping to Bradford Council, call 01274 434366 and ask for the Environment Enforcement Team or go to bradford.gov.uk.
