COUNCILLORS and residents have been left bemused after Bradford Council misspelled street names on new signs in Wrose.

Claremont Grove, Claremont Crescent, Claremont Avenue and Claremont Road have all acquired a letter U, meaning they have become Claremount, on new streets signs put up in each of the streets.

The signs, which have been branded “silly mistakes” and “embarrassing” by an angry councillor, now appear alongside the correctly spelled names on the streets.

The mistake has also proved costly for the red-faced authority amid claims the error could cost almost £1,000.

Councillor Brendan Stubbs (Lib Dem, Eccleshill) said he was contacted by a Wrose resident who spotted the new signs and was amazed by what he was told.

He said the error could have cost the authority up to £1,000 and while it was easy to make a spelling mistake, there should have been checks in place when expensive signs were being created.

Cllr Stubbs said: “We are constantly told there isn’t enough money, but silly mistakes like this mean we are wasting hundreds of pounds.

“These things all add up and it shouldn’t be the case that a sign can end up on the wall spelled wrong.

“These little mistakes add up. It would not have taken much effort to find out the correct spelling.

“Just a little bit of care and attention was needed.

“It’s not a terrible thing, nobody has died.

“They have made a mistake and it has cost a few hundred pounds, which could have gone on other services.

“Someone, somewhere has been left embarrassed by this. It is almost funny.”

A Bradford Council spokesman was not available for comment when contacted by the Telegraph & Argus.

Cllr Vanda Greenwood (Lab, Windhill and Wrose) said she had also been contacted by a number of residents complaining of the misspelled signs as soon as they went up last week.

She added that she has since contacted the council, which was preparing correctly spelled signs to be put up in their place.

Cllr Greenwood said: “It is embarrassing and should not have happened.

“It was a genuine mistake and we don’t know how it has happened. The council are rectifying it with signs which have the correct spelling. We are not happy it has happened. We are trying to get it sorted out as soon as we possibly can. The council are aware of it and are preparing new signs to go up.”

UPDATE: Bradford Council says it will fix a number of misspelled street signs in Wrose by the end of this week.
Claremont Grove, Claremont Crescent, Claremont Avenue and Claremont Road have all acquired a letter U, meaning they have become Claremount on each of the new street signs put up.
It was pointed out by Councillor Brendan Stubbs (Lib Dem, Eccleshill, pictured) after he was told about it by a Wrose resident.
The authority blamed the error on a private company, adding the total cost was £90 and not almost £1,000 as previously claimed.
A Bradford Council spokesperson, said: "This was an error by a private company who made up these signs for the council.
"Council officers sent the correct spelling of Claremont to the company, who have therefore apologised. The cost of the signs is around £90, which will be paid back to the council.”
