KINDHEARTED members of a Bingley golf club hope to pass the £200,000 mark for funds raised for Children in Need over the last 25 years.

The Shipley Golf Club will stage its 25th anniversary competition for the national charity on Friday, November 18, the day of this year’s televised appeal night.

The competition started in 1992 and was the brainchild of former Yorkshire cricketer Phil Carrick, who was a member of the club, and died of leukaemia in 2000.

It has raised £188,000 over the previous years of events, with organisers confident that they can now surpass the £200,000 barrier.

The event has proved to be the club’s biggest event in its calendar, where club members wear fancy dress with a Children in Need yellow-coloured theme.

The milestone golf day has already reached its full allocation of participants for this year’s competition.

Club members have also presented cheques on the charity’s televised night in previous years of the event.

Glyn Brown, the club’s director of green, who will also be playing, said: “It was Phil’s idea, he conceived the whole thing.

“When we started it, Children in Need was not as big as it is now.

“We have 31 teams taking part and unfortunately we can’t have anymore as there are only so many we can get on the golf course to play. We have a total of 120 people playing on the course on the day.

“It is a big club effort to run the event held every year.

“Everybody who plays seems to enter into the spirit of things.”

Mr Brown, who has been a club member for the last 42 years, added the event proves to be a popular annual contest among his fellow players.

He said: “It is a permanent fixture in our club diary and is always very well supported.

“We will try to make as much money as we can.

This year’s contest at the Beckfoot Lane club will feature 31 teams of four players battling it out.

The day will not only feature 18 holes of action but also a raffle and auction on the same night.

Children in Need has raised more than £600 million since it started in 1980.
