A CLEAN-UP campaign is underway in the wake of rain-soaked Bingley Music Live which organisers and townsfolk have declared a great success despite the downpours.

Bad weather held off until Saturday when a day-long deluge turned Myrtle Park into a mini mudbath beneath 90,000 boots and wellies.

But ward councillor Mark Shaw, who went on each of the festival’s three days, said it had been a magnificent success.

“Yes the weather tried to dampen things, but it couldn’t kill the spirit of Bingley!” Cllr Shaw (Con, Bingley) said proudly.

“It was a massive success and brought loads of new people into the town.

“In terms of clearing up afterwards, a lot of youngsters were gathering up rubbish as it was going on and even building towers and archways with it.

“And of course the main field got a bit muddy - it’s a meadow and will grow back to normal in a couple of weeks.

Bingley chamber of trade president and rock fan Howard Martin said BML had again delivered a good financial dividend for the town.

“Friday seemed a bit quieter than usual, but I went along on Saturday and Sunday and it was excellent.

“My daughter Charlotte, who’s 25, and more representative of the crowds than me, was there with friends and said they all had a fantastic time

“The acts are chosen really cleverly so there is always something that appeals to everyone, from acoustic to reggae and rock.

“There’s a real cross section of people and I’ve not heard any reports of misbehaviour.

Bingley Music Live has got a good family feel to it and always feels very safe.

“It got a bit muddy, but not “Glastonbury muddy” and with some 45,000 people going to it, you can’t have that many feet without some degree of churn-up.

“And what’s more the money spills out into the town because it finishes relatively early at night so people then go for a final pint or a meal.”

Lee O’Hanlon of PR agency Tiny Cow which promotes the event for Bradford Council said: “We endured a horrendous downpour on Saturday, but when Tinie Tempah came on the crowd went wild.

“And on Sunday it ended perfectly with Travis and everyone joining in to sing Why Does It Always Rain On Me,” he said.
