A CURRY chef from Bradford has been named the best at his craft in the north of England.

Tariq Mahmood won the Chef of the Year (North) accolade at the English Curry Awards.

The 52-year-old, who works at Kipling’s restaurant in Greengates, said he was “jubilant” and “over the moon” after winning the prestigious award.

“It is fantastic to be a Bradfordian and to claim this curry award,” said Mr Mahmood.

“I didn’t really expect to win because there was so many other good chefs from around the North.

“I am jubilant and over the moon. It is just great to have won this award.”

Mr Mahmood has been a curry chef for more than 30 years and has worked for Kipling’s for 20 years.

“I think I am good at my job – I think I am the best,” he said. “I have confidence in myself.

“I love my job and I love creating new dishes – it is my hobby!

“I certainly enjoy it – and I think that is what makes you the best.

“If you don’t enjoy it you will not get anywhere. You have to love your job – that is how you make your name.”

Mr Mahmood also praised his customers for their support, and said: “I am very proud to have won. I am genuinely over the moon.

“It was fantastic to hear my name read out. It was a fantastic moment.

“I would like to thank all my customers for supporting me. My locals, they are saying that I am the best.

“I enjoy working for this community in Greengates.”

Kipling’s enjoyed a double success at the awards ceremony, which was held in Manchester on Monday night, as its Sowerby Bridge eaterie was named Outstanding Restaurant of the Year.

The awards recognise and reward the hard work and commitment of those who work tirelessly to provide the country with curry.

Mr Mahmood was not the only Bradford-based winner. Aziz Catering, in Girlington, won the national Caterer of the Year award.
