A FAMILY was rescued from the water after following its sat nav's guidance to the letter.

The family from Barnsley, including two adults, two children and a dog, was travelling to St Ives Park when the day trip took a turn for the worst.

The car was driven into the beck, leaving the family stranded.

Residents tried in vain to rescue the family’s car from Harden Beck at Pack Horse Bridge, also known as Beckfoot Bridge, in Bingley, when they got stuck, but had to call a tow company to get them out.

Witness Christine Shears, of Bingley, said: “It took them over an hour to get out of the water after they got stuck.

“It’s quite unusual for people to get stuck on the bridge.

“People had no joy when they tried to rescue them.”

A cyclist then tried to pass the car, but fell into the water.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened at around noon today, and emergency services were not called out.
