SPECIAL wreaths to honour those who fell at the Somme have been created by the Bingley Poppy Appeal to encourage remembrance of the First World War's bloodiest conflict.

The "Somme 100" wreaths have been specially made with the familiar red poppies, but also include a number of 'bleuet' flowers - the French flower of remembrance.

The bleuet is a type of cornflower which also grew on war-ravaged land and was also a nickname for conscripted French soldiers due to their blue uniforms worn after 1915.

Bingley Poppy Appeal organiser Collin MacDonald said: "The Somme's 100th anniversary provides an opportunity to commemorate the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the battle, to reflect upon the human cost of conflict and to have hope for a more peaceful world."

Mr MacDonald said while they were not actively marketing the wreaths, there was a suggested donation of £20.

The Poppy Appeal also has a limited amount of commemorative Centenary Battle of the Somme lapel pins made from brass shell cases found at the battle site.
