PEDIGREE beasts of every shape and size are being brought to peak condition ready for the 135th Bingley Show which takes place next month.

Exhibitors from across the north of England always attend one of the region’s biggest and best-loved shows, which takes place in Myrtle Park.

Organised by the Airedale Agricultural Society, its vice-chairman David Hempel said it is hoped visitor numbers will beat last year’s total of some 14,000 people.

“It was a very good day last year and we’ve booked the same great weather again this time,” Mr Hempel said.

“We really try hard to provide a bit of something for everybody and a great deal of effort goes into creating a superb family day out.”

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, July 23, and traditional livestock and agricultural competitions will be on offer along with attractions such as the Wise Owl birds of prey display team, the Sheep Show and a fast paced motorcycle trials display by three-times British Trials Champion Steve Colley.

Those with a competitive streak can enter some of the wide range of classes held on the day, including handicrafts, arts and horticulture.

Britain’s last cat show under canvas also takes place at the show and contenders can enter on the day, just as they can for the cattle, sheep, poultry and guinea pigs classes.

Those who like competition of a more strenuous nature can take part in the Bingley Harriers 10km Race which starts from the main show ring at 11.45am.

Showjumping events form one of the day’s major attractions, taking place in the main ring throughout the day. The event attracts some of the sport’s top riders and their horses, as well as local competitors looking to compete at one of the region’s most popular shows.

The showjumping begins at 8.30am, and returns later in the afternoon for the action packed ‘accumulator’.

“This is always a crowd pleaser and a good reason to both arrive early in the day and enjoy the early evening in the glorious amphitheatre of Myrtle Park,” Mr Hempel said.

A revised show layout for 2016 includes a new-look members’ marquee sited in the bottom meadow alongside the main ring.

Councillor David Heseltine, (Con, Bingley) said the event was always a summer highlight.

“Bingley’s prestigious show is back again and it’s always a great day out for families and the farming community alike,” he said.

Bingley Town Council vice-chairman Ros Dawson added: “It’s always a fantastic celebration of country living.”
