THE Yorkshire Building Society's charitable foundation has given £5,000 to support the district's communities devastated by floods.

The funding, from the Bradford-based society, is part of a £25,000 package being provided across the north.

Also, the society's branches have been collecting goods such as non-perishable food, cleaning products and toys for victims of the flooding.

Shipley MP Philip Davies and Dave Forrest, director of Volunteering Bradford, visited the Shipley branch to see the work being carried out and to thank staff.

Mr Forrest said: "We have been moved by the amazing generosity of the customers, staff and Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation with this fantastic donation to the flood appeal.

"The floods had a devastating effect on more than 300 homes and businesses across the district. The funds will make a real difference to people who are struggling with the clean-up this winter."

Andy Caton, trustee for the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, said many members and colleagues had been personally affected by the floods.

He added: "It's amazing to see how quickly communities have come together in helping people affected."
