A MASSIVE clear up is under way at Bradford and Bingley sports club where flooding has wrecked carpets and is still trapping cars in swamped car parks.

The River Aire burst its banks on Saturday night, sending a surge of water across rugby and cricket pitches and into the lower bar of the clubhouse at the site off Wagon Lane.

Yesterday, police had to lock the front gates to prevent people risking 4ft deep floods in order to get to stranded vehicles.

Sports club manager Lucy Cochrane arrived at 7am this morning with a team of volunteers and is busy ripping out ruined carpets and mopping up floors.

"We'd put flood barriers up in front of the clubhouse doors on Saturday evening, but the water still came through." said Miss Cochrane, who has been the manager since August.

"When I came down on Sunday morning it was like a fast flowing river all round the building after the river.

"The police had to lock the gates for health and safety reasons to stop people trying to reach their cars," she said.

"I was down at 7am to survey the damage and all the carpets have had to go from the downstairs bar.

"Luckily it didn't get up into the main bar area.

"And because it's on a flood plain, we're not insured against flooding, so we will have to look to our hundreds of members for support. Luckily we've got members involved in every trade and business there is."

Miss Cochrane and other clean-up volunteers have been helped by her brother, Matthew, a first team player, her dad, Stuart Cochrane, who carried away carpets on his builder's truck and mum, Louise, the club's catering manager.

Mrs Cochrane was busy mopping up the club's kitchen area this morning.

"Because of the barriers it was just water that came in, unlike in 2000 when it was all sorts of debris and flooded the top bar too," said.

"We know there's more rain forecast for the next few days, so we're just keeping our fingers cross it doesn't get any worse," Mrs Cochrane said.
