FIRE crews have issued a safety warning after an electric blanket fire led to a woman being treated for smoke inhalation.

A crew from Shipley Fire Station was called to a flat at Dock Mill on Dock Lane, Shipley at 3.17am today.

A woman in her mid 20s living in the flat had awoken to find that an electric blanket on the bed had caught fire causing a large amount of smoke in the bedroom.

She got out of bed and switched off the blanket, removed the remnants from the bed and awoke her flatmate before the two left the flat.

One was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital as a precautionary matter.

A smoke detector was in the flat, but was not working.

Jav Khan, watch commander from Shipley Fire Station, said: "This highlights the importance of checking your smoke alarm is working.

"The other point is that prior to getting electric blankets out of the back of the cupboard and dusting them off you could check if they are working properly and are in good working order."
