A GILSTEAD couple is celebrating an amazing 70 years of happy marriage with a special cake cutting ceremony at the Shipley church where the pair still worship every Sunday.

Bradford-born Kenneth Jones, now 92, was a young RAF wireless operator stationed at Lossiemouth during the Second World War when he met his future wife, Elsie, now 94, who was doing the same vital war work.

They married on July 13, 1945, in her home town of Forres, Morayshire, and settled back in Bradford, first living in Lidget Green then Bankfoot, before moving to live with their Baptist minister son, Keith, and his wife, Denise, in Gilstead.

"They are the most loving and caring parents and always inclined me to do what I felt was right, which led to me becoming a minister," said Rev Jones, who has just retired from Shipley Baptist Church.

"There is the annual barbecue at the church on Sunday and my wife has made them a beautiful cake.

"On the day itself, they will be at home with family," he said.

"They've always had a very relaxed attitude to life, my mother likes sewing and knitting and my father had a real gift as a watercolour artist.

"He's also always been a model railway buff and is currently making beautiful model buildings for his two great grandsons. So he's done that for three generations," Rev Jones said.
