THE owners of an amusement arcade in Shipley have been denied permission to move the business to a larger unit.

Planners felt that moving Teddy’s Amusements from 8 Market Street to 10 Market Street, an empty corner unit, would harm the image of Shipley Town Centre.

D Biesterfield had submitted the application, for a change of use from retail to an amusement centre, including gambling machines, and a tanning salon.

Planning officers pointed out that amusement arcades were required to have blocked out windows, adding: “The harm caused to the viability and vitality through the large dead frontage created by the development would reduce the attractiveness for shoppers coming into the centre.

The report reveals that other retailers have expressed “significant interest” in the empty unit.
