SHIPLEY MP Philip Davies will today join a Conservative revolt against his own party’s plans to cut defence spending.

The backbencher will urge David Cameron not to drop a pledge to set aside two per cent of GDP for defence in “an increasingly uncertain and dangerous” world.

About 30 Tory MPs are expected to stage the rebellion, in the run-up to the publication of the party manifesto for the May 7 General Election.

Mr Davies linked the shrinking defence budget to the rising amount being spent on overseas aid, after a law was passed to ensure it reaches 0.7 per cent of GDP.

He said: "The world is an increasingly uncertain and dangerous place, and the first duty of the Government is defence of the realm and protecting the public.

"It is unjustifiable to guarantee a hugely inflated amount of money for overseas aid, and not to guarantee the current funding levels for defence."
