A JEALOUS husband has been jailed for beating up a man he suspected of having an affair with his wife, leaving him with lasting damage to his eye, a court heard today.

Matthew Capper, 33, became angry when he saw his wife in a car with Richard Marshall and pursued them to an address in Nab Wood, Shipley.

Mr Marshall tried to flee on foot but was caught by Capper, who knocked him to the ground and continued to punch him, fracturing his eye socket, prosecutor Philip Adams told Bradford Crown Court.

Jailing him for 20 months, Judge Jonathan Rose said Capper had carried out a savage assault.

He told him: "You are a man of some size and you must have put a great deal of force into this repeated assault."

Mr Marshall suffered facial fractures which required surgery to insert a metal plate. The court heard he still suffered from blurred vision five months after the assault.

Capper, of Bradford Road, Shipley, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

His barrister, Holly Betke, said her client suspected his wife was having an affair with Mr Marshall. He had gone out to buy a birthday card when he saw them in a car. He had followed to confront them, but not necessarily in a violent manner.

Miss Betke said Capper was now reconciled with his wife. He had sought help for alcohol and anger problems and was genuinely remorseful.

Judge Rose said Capper had been jealous and angry. There was a degree of premeditation in that he was determined to find Mr Marshall and give him a beating.

He acknowledged the defendant was understandably deeply upset about the breakdown of his marriage, was depressed and resorted to alcohol abuse but he said there was no justification, excuse or explanation for what he did.

Judge Rose added that it was an offence of greater harm, a sustained and repeated assault, and the complainant was entirely innocent.
