SCHOOL students from the district will travel to Bosnia as part of a delegation led by local councillor Adrian Farley.

Three 18 -year-olds from University Academy Keighley will be chosen to visit the country to see the effects of genocide at first hand.

Coun Farley invited the school to send representatives on next month’s trip after working with students in recent months to teach them about Bosnia’s recent history.

Coun Farley, who represents Keighley West ward on Bradford Council, visited Bosnia last December as part of a party of 24 young leaders from the UK invited by the charity Remembering Srebrenica.

They explored battle-scarred ruins, toured burial sites and visited the memorial to the massacre in the city of Srebrenica in 1995.

Coun Farley said: “As part of that delegation we had to make a pledge that he would raise awareness back in the UK and promote community cohesion.

“I’m working with University Academy Keighley to give the students information that ties in the curriculum.”

Coun Farley and his Bradford colleague on last year’s trip to Bosnia, Coun Alex Ross-Shaw, hosted a memorial event in Bradford to remember the genocide.

They have invited about 20 people who attended that event to accompany them to Bosnia in November.

Members of the delegation include Keighley community activist Charlie Bhowmick, and young Christians and Muslims from Bradford.
