Bunny hops, a barbecue and a bouncy castle are on offer at the Easter opening of a new woodland exercise route at Ferniehurst Dell this week.

Children’s activities and organised games will take also place during the afternoon celebration of outdoor fun.

Baildon Town Council provided the £11,000 funding for the solid wooden features along the route where all the family can work out with varying degrees of difficulty.

Town councillor Ian Lyons, chairman of Baildon’s health and youth committee, project-managed the scheme on the council’s behalf and said he was confident it would get great use.

“Local people told us that they want to see more activities that promote healthy lifestyles, in particular for young people.

“So we found a scheme that caters for a wide variety of abilities.”

A Trim Trail is a trail of timber outdoor fitness and training equipment for all ages and all levels of fitness.

It is intended to be used unsupervised, although very young children would need supervision from an adult.

There is equipment designed to improve balance and co-ordination, equipment to exercise upper and lower body, and climbing equipment designed to exercise the whole body.

A grand opening takes place on Wednesday at 1pm, which the Friends of Ferniehurst Dell will help to organise, with lots of activities for the whole family.

Haworth sculptor Craig Dyson will also be at the event to kick off his contribution to the Yorkshire Armed Forces Sculpture Trail at the Dell.

“Craig Dyson is one of the impressive sculptors working on a design for the Dell and he has something very special planned,” said Mr Lyons, speaking in his role as chairman of Friends of Ferniehurst Dell, which is developing the military-themed art experience.

“He is planning to create a giant eye sculpture from 2p pieces.

“The idea, which came from a pupil at Titus Salt school, is that the coins will be donated by people with a connection to the Armed Forces, and will be incorporated into the piece.

“Ideally, we would like people to come along to the Trim Trail Open Day and give us their 2p coins.”
