Hospital staff find new way to care
Staff at Airedale Hospital have been discovering what it is like for a person with learning disabilities to use their services.
The hospital held a "getting together day" in response to alarming reports about how people with learning disabilities are treated in hospitals across the country.
The Diversity drama group from Harrogate PCT performed a play portraying positive and negative experiences of visiting hospitals.
Through this and discussions, both staff and people with learning disabilities had a chance to learn more about each other.
Event co-ordinator, medicine matron Anne Shirley, said it had been a great success.
She said: "It was a great day and everybody mainly learned that communication is important.
"We will be continuing our link with the local specialist learning disability service and the feedback was so good that we are thinking about making it a yearly thing."
Specifically, staff benefited from discovering what information the hospital needed to know about people with learning disabilities prior to admission and how this could be built into the information collection process to enhance the patient experience.
