A FOOTBALL tournament in Keighley raised cash for refugees forced out of their homes in Burma.
The Goals for Burma contest, organised by the group 1 Vision, was at Marley Activities and Coaching Centre earlier this month (July) and generated a total of £1,200 for the Rohingya Muslim minority.
A campaign of ethnic cleansing has forced hundreds of thousands of these people out of Burma and into squalid refugee camps in neighbouring Bangladesh.
1 Vision’s charity seven-a-side tournament featured trophies and medals for the successful teams and food stalls.
As they did last year, when they held a similar contest in aid of the people in Palestine, they also held a live tournament draw.
Aroj Ali, one of the Keighley-based organisers, said: “We had a lovely turnout with 20 teams taking part from all over UK.
“The winners were Elite FC, a side from Oldham, who beat Sona FC, also from Oldham, 1-0 in the final.
“The weather was amazing and we had lots of spectators from all backgrounds.”
Volunteers from 1 Vision have previously carried out three visits to the Bangladesh refugee camps, distributing tens of thousands of pounds worth of desperately needed aid.
