HARRY and Meghan got married a day early as Laycock Primary School hosted their own Royal Wedding.

Pupils Eloise Pinder and Axel Dyson-Ryan played the famous couple for a mock ceremony in the parish church on Friday morning.

Then the entourage, including pupils playing bridesmaids and royal guests, returned to school for afternoon tea on the grass.

Teacher Freya Carroll said the entire school was involved in the event with pupils and staff dressing for the occasion, and taking food to share.

She said: “The day was absolutely fantastic and the children really got into it.

“They have been looking forward to the real wedding. They watched some interviews with Meghan and Harry, and we’ve talked about the Royal Family and British values.

During the ceremony, Eloise’s real-life brother Nathan gave her away. Real-life vicar, the Rev Christine Bank led the service.

Laycock School head Juliet Nove said: “Education is about a broad curriculum that encompasses opportunities for learning through first-hand experiences and fun, and the Royal Wedding was a national event that lent itself so beautifully to a whole school community day and cross-curricular learning.

Kildwick Primary School organised a Royal British Bake Off to mark Harry and Meghan’s wedding, with children baking cakes and buns with a royal theme.

Parents were invited in at the end of the day to judge the cakes in terms of appearance and taste.

Rev School head Tim Whitehead said: “The day was an overwhelming success and a great way to celebrate this historic event.”

A celebration event was held for around 300 residents and their guests at the recently-built Redrow estate in Steeton.

Organisers gathered support from local shops and businesses as well as doing their own fundraising.

Guests were given an event wristband, allowing them free Grandma Wild’s biscuits and juice at the Tea and Coffee Station. A food vans sold breakfast items.

Wedding coverage was projected onto a screen, while in the Yellow Tent. There was face painting, glitter tattoos and Union Jack temporary tattoos.

A lookalike for Disney character Moana sang Disney songs for the children, followed by singer Pip Barton, BabyBallet with Miss Heather, and Rugbytots coaching.
