AN OTLEY-BASED charity is celebrating receiving a £10,000 boost from a local supermarket.

The town's Sainsbury's branch made Otley and District Talking Newspaper its charity of the year for 2017-18.

Representatives from the store, which has been providing practical and fundraising support over the past 12 months, presented the group with a cheque for £10,117 on Friday, May 25.

The money will be used to help cover the set-up and running costs of the Talking Newspaper's new website - https://otleytalkingnews.org.uk/ - which has just gone live.

Secretary John Barker said he was "delighted" with the donation and, after receiving the cheque, told the Sainsbury's contingent: "That is excellent - thank you very much indeed.

"Our website is now up and running and people can subscribe to it, which is free, to receive our 'USB by post' service.

"They can also listen to the news, including an archive covering the past four weeks, online."

Sainsbury's supported the Talking Newspaper from 2016-17, too, when the funds raised helped the group - which records and delivers local news to blind and partially sighted residents - buy a USB copier machine.

Based upstairs at Otley Methodist Church, the charity delivers USB sticks to homes in Otley, Pool-in-Whafedale, Menston, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Horsforth, Yeadon, Rawdon and Guiseley.

Sainsbury's Otley, meanwhile, is now looking for its next local charity to support over the coming year.

The store is set to shortlist three contenders and then ask customers to vote, in store or online, between June 11 and 24.

Store Manager Paul Mitchell said: "There are so many fantastic charities in the local area which do brilliant work in our community.

"We’ve had a great year working in partnership with Talking Newspaper and we’re excited to be offering a new charity the chance to receive support from our customers and colleagues."
