STICK-SWINGING dance troupe Wharfedale Wayzgoose will celebrate their 25th anniversary next month.

The Morris side will mark the occasion on Saturday, June 9 by hosting a 'day of dance' in their home town of Otley.

Known for their distinctive Border style, they have invited other groups from across the county to visit and take part.

Anita Walker, a founding member of Wharfedale Wayzgoose, said people can expect to hear melodeons, bells and drums throughout the day.

She said: "The popularity of Wayzgoose increases as each year passes and we’re thrilled we’ve made it to 25 years.

"We started off in 1993 as a small group of friends performing locally, but over the years we have acquired more dancers and performed with sides from America, Australia, Romania and France.

"We’ve always tried to develop our own style based on speed, flare and a reckless disregard for our own personal safety - this is what onlookers will enjoy at our Day of Dance!”

The dancing will start at 11am on June 9 and there will be four sessions held at various locations during the day, starting from 11am.

Ten Morris sides in total, demonstrating differing styles, have been invited including the Buttercross Belles, Briggate Morris, 400 Roses, Hornbeam, Hexadaisy and the Bradshaw Mummers.

The event coincides with the local celebrations being held for Thomas Chippendale’s 300th birthday, and features on the official programme for the master furniture designer's tercentenary.
