TWO Bradford district home care providers have been ordered to improve by inspectors.

Bronte Care Services, in Bingley, and Total Homecare (Yorkshire) Ltd, based in Shipley, have both been rated as requiring improvement overall following inspections by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Bronte Care Services, which provides personal care to people in their own homes in Bingley and the surrounding areas, was rated inadequate for its safety and required improvement in the effectiveness, caring, well-led and responsiveness categories. The inspection found medicines were not managed safely and found a number of discrepancies where inspectors could not confirm whether people had received their medicines as prescribed.

They found people who used the service had been put at risk of harm from missed calls and risk assessments did not provide sufficient information.

Inspectors saw handwritten entries had been added to one person’s medicine administration records (MAR) chart, which did not always contain full details of the dose or number of tablets.

Bronte Care Services’ announced inspection was on July 11 and 12, with 95 people using the service, based at St John’s House, Clyde Street, Bingley, at this time.

A Bronte Care Services spokesman said it was very disappointed with the outcome of its inspection but said it had made all of the necessary changes and invited CQC inspectors to return.

Total Homecare (Yorkshire) Ltd, based in Saltaire Road, required improvement in the safety and well-led categories.

People told the inspectors there was a lack of continuity with their care workers and the care staff were always running late, said the report. But it was rated as good in the effective, caring and responsiveness categories.

The announced inspection took place on August 3 and 4, when inspectors spoke on the phone to 11 service-users and five relatives. On August 7, inspectors spoke to the home’s manager and staff, and with four more staff the following day. The agency cared for 50 people at the time of the inspections.

Total Homecare provides care and support to people in their own homes throughout the Bradford area.

Kelly Blamires, Total Homecare’s registered manager, said: “We have spoken to the CQC since they have inspected, to get feedback and they are happy with the measures we have taken.

“We are in the progress of sorting this out. Next time they come back it will be all good.”
