A PAIR of former Bradford City favourites joined sports television presenter Jeff Stelling today as he strolled into Bradford as part of the Prostate Cancer UK March for Men.

Leg 12 of the 400-mile trek saw Jeff Stelling and his band of marchers walk from Oakwell, home of Barnsley FC, to the Bantam’s Valley Parade ground.

The 15-day, 15-marathon challenge sees the Sky Sports presenter walk from St James Park in Exeter to St James’ Park in Newcastle, visiting more than 40 football clubs along the way.

He was joined on the walk by two men who have played for and managed City, Chris Kamara and Paul Jewell, as well as Ronnie Moore and a group of volunteers aiming to raise £500,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

The route saw Mr Stelling and his team arrive through Liversedge and Cleckheaton, before passing through Oakenshaw, Bierley, Bowling Park, and Bradford city centre, before finishing at Valley Parade.

Mr Stelling, 62, said the group were buoyed by “glorious sunny weather” in the district.

Speaking from the physio table at Valley Parade, he said: “The legs are getting a bit tired now, but we passed the 300-mile mark today.

"I feel a lot better now we're finished, and the body is feeling it, but I would be lying if I said I felt any worse than I did after the first two or three.

“We’re more than three-quarters of the way now, so the end is in sight.

“The support we’ve had has been fantastic, we’ve have money thrust at us from all directions. One lady even offered £100 for a selfie with me, I only charge a tenner normally! At the end a bloke called Abdul handed me £20 and another guy gave me £30.

“The support from the clubs has been great too, Bradford had food, drink and physio waiting for us at the end.

“Last year we visited 40 clubs, so this year we wanted to visit as many clubs we didn’t get to last year, including Bradford.

“I think the walk is having a big impact, and it’s encouraging the message is getting across.”

Mr Stelling also praised his good friend Chris Kamara for keeping the teams spirits up throughout the day, and Paul Jewell for allowing the other walkers to spend the day walking and chatting with "legends of the game".

Mr Kamara, 59, played 30 games for Bradford, and was manager from 1995 to 1998.

He added: “The walk was really enjoyable, chatting football with everyone for hours.

“It’s great coming back to Bradford too, it’s probably eight or nine years since my last visit.

“It’s a wonderful achievement what Jeff is doing. I’m just doing one walk but to do 15 is phenomenal, as is raising so much money and awareness.

“It’s made me understand the importance of getting any little twinge checked out by doctors instead of putting it off.”

Paul Jewell, 52, took over from Kamara in 1998 as manager after playing 269 games for City.

He added: “The weather and the people were very kind to us, and it was great to meet so many good people and walk for such a great cause, and of course return to Valley Parade.”

Mr Stelling will finish his walk in Newcastle on Friday, June 16. To support the March for Men, visit prostatecanceruk.org/jeffsmarch or text ‘JEFF’ to 70004 to donate £5.
