PEOPLE across the district, from students to pensioners, faced up to dementia today by posting messages on social media.

To mark Dementia Awareness Week, the Alzheimer’s Society challenged people to 'confront dementia', by addressing it directly in a letter and taking a selfie holding up their message.

Charity staff took mobile photo booths around Bradford, Ilkley and Keighley, aiming for 300 participants across the district.

Venues included City Hall, the University of Bradford, Carlisle Business Centre, Bradford Interchange, Airedale Shopping Centre, Cliffe Castle, Keighley Bus Station and Ilkley Brewery.

This year’s Dementia Awareness Week focuses on sharing concerns about dementia by addressing it directly.

Paul Smithson, services manager for Alzheimer’s Society Bradford, said the photo booth challenge was well supported.

"We've been overwhelmed by the support," he said. "Well over 100 people have taken part, people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. We've had college and university students, even a brass band got involved.

"Even those who didn't want to have their photos taken have stopped and listened. People have been talking about their experiences of dementia and finding out about the work the Alzheimer's Society does."
