A MENTAL health charity has gone bananas in Bradford city centre as part of an awareness week.

Andrew McCathy and John Boxall, of the Cellar Trust, based in Farfield Road, Shipley, were handing out the fruit to early morning commuters and passers-by today as well as showing a film on the Big Screen in City Park to mark the start of the special week and grab people's attention.

The charity, which began 25 years ago and was named the cellar after it was started in the depths of a Victorian terraced house, supports people across the district with moderate to severe mental health problems in their journey to recovery.

One of its initiatives is a cafe/catering academy helping to equip people with skills they could use to eventually return to employment.

Working in partnership with Shipley College, clients can undertake catering qualifications and, hopefully, progress into paid employment. It also runs a conference centre, a charity shop and a wood workshop.

The Cellar Trust relies on funding, grants and donations and any money they raise is ploughed back into the project so more people will benefit.

National Mental Health Awareness week runs until Sunday.
