HOSPITAL chiefs in Bradford have been summing up their year in numbers.

Staff at Bradford Royal Infirmary delivered 5,917 babies in 2014/15 - an average of more than 16 a day.

In addition, 131,384 patients - or almost 230 a day - were seen at the hospital's Accident & Department.

The number of inpatients treated totalled 120,036, 27,813 operations were performed and 521,420 outpatients appointments were completed.

The Trust employed about 5,000 members of staff at its hospitals, supported by 516 volunteers, looking after a growing population of about 522,000 people.

Professor Clive Kay, chief executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and other key role holders revealed the statistics at the Trust's annual meeting.

Prof Kay said highlights of the last financial year included the opening of a £2 million neonatal unit at BRI, the redesign of the hospital's A&E unit and building work starting on BRI's new £28m hospital wing.

He also pledged the organisation will continue to focus on the quality and safety of its services and investing in staff, equipment and facilities.

Matthew Horner, director of finance, reported that £17.5m from the Trust's capital investment programme had gone into buildings, equipment and IT infrastructure throughout the year.

He said £4.4m of that had been spent on improving patients' environment including the Cardiac Catheter Lab and refurbishments of Wards 4 and 20 at the BRI.

Donations to the Bradford Hospitals Charity totalled £500,000 with £400,000 of it spent, including buying a machine that regulates special care babies' body cooling and warming and a portable blood pressure monitor.

Mr Horner said: “The charity will also continue to enhance the refurbishment of wards and clinical areas from basic specification to higher quality.

"Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has donated generously and I can assure you the trustees will continue to deploy the funds in the most effective way.”

Consultant surgeon Mark Steward, vice-chairman of the Trust's Council of Governors, told the meeting that the Foundation Trust has 49,390 members, giving them one of the highest memberships in the country.
