A trio of notable chefs were in Bradford’s City Park yesterday to promote the fact the city will soon play host to the World Curry Festival for the first time.

In under three weeks, the festival, which is now in its third year, will bring with it a host of food stalls and live cookery demonstrations featuring chefs from local Indian restaurants and names from further afield.

Yesterday, as details of the Festival were officially launched in City Park, three notable chefs were in attendance to promote their continuing involvement in the event – Kaushy Patel, the founder and executive chef at Prashad in Great Horton which was named Gordon Ramsay’s best Indian restaurant in 2010; Gurpareet Bains, 2011 English Curry Awards chef of the year and creator of the world’s healthiest curry; and Barrington Douglas, the man behind the award-winning Caribbean restaurant in Huddersfield, Discovery Bay.

Organiser Zulfi Karim, from Bradford, said: “It’s a real pleasure that we can be here in Bradford and that we can be supported by local businesses and Bradfordians.

“We’ve created something which is going to be a new era in festivals, but more importantly something for Bradford. The city does need great events and the World Curry Festival will only be one of them.

“This is a celebration of food so anybody who enjoys food, whether its eating food, cooking food or even smelling it or looking at it. As long at they don’t mind a bit of spice, they will be in for a treat.”

He added that he hoped Bradfordians would attend the festival as it would be a fun weekend, and if successful, would hope to make Bradford its more permanent home.

The festival will run from Friday, September 21, to Sunday, September 23, 25. Bradford restaurants to be involved will include Prashad, Zouk and Zara.

Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Dale Smith attended the launch and sampled one of Mr Bains’s spicy creations.

He said: “I am sure that Bradford will celebrate and enjoy the whole festival and this is just a little taster of what is to come.”
