A community-minded resident, for example an older person walking a young child to school, or someone cleaning the path of a neighbour

JOAN FENTON

Joan is a member of BOPA (Bradford Older People’s Alliance), BDSP (Bradford District Senior Power), and is also a Lady Freemason.

She is also a member of the Bradford Older People's Focus Group and volunteers with fundraising initiatives and setting up meetings and events.

She recently organised an event in aid of the British Legion at the Midland Hotel on Forster Square, selling tickets and visiting shops and organisations in Bradford, Bingley and Keighley to collect donations.

Joan regularly helps out her neighbours, doing shopping or cleaning for them if they are feeling unwell.

A friend of hers broke his leg last year when he was in London on holiday, and Joan arranged for someone to bring him back home, and then went every day to see to him, cook his meals, clean for him and look after him until he recovered.

Joan was nominated by Jeanette Booth from the Safer and Stronger Communities team at Bradford Council, who said: "Joan never says no!

"She takes on projects and ensures that she sees them through.

"She will do anything for anybody, is a lovely, friendly person, and always has a smile for everyone she meets.

"I know that if I ever needed anything, I could ring Joan up and she would be there to help me out any way she could."

TIM JAMES

Tim has been involved with the Crag Road community regeneration project in Windhill, Shipley, since it began around two years ago.

He is the treasurer, and with other members of the fundraising team has raised about £4,000 to help develop the project, which was established to work on health and well-being issues in the area.

The group holds community 'meet and eat' sessions, offering free meals alongside advice and support for local residents who may feel isolated.

Tim and other members of the project are currently developing a community allotment on some unused land, with an aim to provide a place for people to go, learn new skills, meet people, get active and raise their levels of confidence and self-esteem.

Tim was nominated by Sarah Jane Naylor at the Bolton Woods Community Centre, who said: "He is incredibly reliable, encourages others, and is dedicated to the regeneration of the area.

"His is a behind the scenes role, but he is nominated because of his determination, brilliant sense of humour, and his amazing commitment to the group.

"Tim made an amazing speech about the project at a neighbourhood forum meeting, and despite public speaking being new to him, he received cards and letters saying how much it had moved people."

TOMMY BARRATT

Tommy is a volunteer at the Eccleshill Mechanics Institute, and coordinates befriending visits to older men who are housebound.

He organises a team of four other befrienders, all older men themselves, who make home visits on a weekly rota.

Tommy, who is 79, has recently been supporting a 92 year-old man who lived alone, visiting him at home and then when he was admitted to hospital at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The man is now in a nursing home having undergone an operation for bowel cancer, and as he has no family, Tommy now visits him at the home to ensure he does not feel lonely and isolated.

Jonathan Thelwell, who nominated Tommy, said: "His befriending keeps him active and gives hope to others.

"Tommy is extremely friendly and very faithful.

"He is polite on the phone and well-mannered with all the men he visits.

"He notes down the needs of the men and tries his best to follow those up and help them.

"He is joyful and brings a laugh to lots of men who are housebound."
