The volunteer category is for those who take on a regular role in a voluntary capacity, for example a befriender who regularly visits an old people's home or someone who coaches a sports team.

David Jessop

David is a founder member of Wrose Parish Council and is very involved in the village's community library, which he helped set up.

He regularly organises litter picks around the village and organised the street planters in the village too.

In addition he organised a rota of residents to lock and unlock a gate in an effort to stop anti-social behaviour taking place and he was instrumental in getting play equipment at Claremont Park.

He has also organised the Christmas tableau display for the village for the past two years, obtaining funding, permission, support and publicity for the venture.

Nigel Cawthorne, who nominated David, said: "According to other residents, David is always there for them, with one saying: 'He is a strong presence within the community and he always goes that extra mile and is more than willing to help in any way.'

"He spends an inordinate amount of his time caring for the village of Wrose and its residents, despite family commitments due to ill health.

"He puts others first and is a doer not a talker - he gets on with the task in hand, and sees it through to its conclusion."

Olga Thompson

Olga, or Aunty Liz, as everybody calls her, has been an active member of the community for many years. She attends Mary Seacole Court, which is a day centre for African and African Caribbean older people in Bradford.

Over the years, she has made and donated rugs to raise money for the centre, prepared lunches there, been on the management committee and carried out many other activities for the centre.

At the age of 92, Olga continues to help and support not just the elders at the day centre, but the wider community too, by preparing meals for those who are housebound, visiting the sick in hospital or in their home, and communicating by phone with those who cannot get out.

She was nominated by Sandra Brown, who said: "Despite her long-term health conditions and disabilities she is constantly reaching out and serving others in the community.

"She is kind, thoughtful, considerate and caring. Always willing to help no matter what her own circumstances might be."

She added that Olga had helped her mother who has Alzheimer's by being a dementia friend, and would often prepare a meal for the whole family to help them out.

Arshad Zaman

Arshad has been actively involved in volunteering in the community for more than ten years. She has helped organise a culturally-appropriate health and wellbeing group for South Asian women. She has also helped set up a girl's group for 11 to 18-year-olds.

Arshad has also volunteered in school to help women with low educational attainment and language barriers to support them to read. In addition she volunteers as a breastfeeding peer with Breastfeeding Network and has supported women with issues related to breastfeeding and sleep deprivation.

She also volunteers at Girlington Community Centre two days a week on projects that help address community needs and helps in fundraising.

Asfa Sajjad, community development worker at Girlington Community Centre, nominated Arshad, and said: "Although she has eight children of her own she always finds time to help others.

"She is very encouraging and always inspires the people she helps. She has encouraged and motivated women with low educational attainment and deprived backgrounds to partake in community projects.

"She is an unsung hero and makes an impact on the quality of life of others."

She added: "Arshad uses her passion and humour to bring life into tasks at hand. She shows compassion and selflessness on a daily basis."
