The Good Neighbours category celebrates community-minded residents, for example an older person walking a young child to school or someone cleaning a neighbour's path.

Shazia Kosar

Shazia has been nominated for her work to clear up an area of her neighbourhood that was blighted by rubbish and flytipping, and her efforts to inspire others to join in and help. Bradford Council leader, and Wibsey ward councillor, David Green nominated her.

Cllr Green said: "Shazia clearly inspired her neighbours by demonstrating her willingness to get things done. She wants to help improve the area and is happy to work with residents and the local authority to make a difference and improve the local area."

It followed complaints to local councillors about rubbish and flytipping on Smiddles Lane and the surrounding area. But when a site visit was carried out by Council officers for the area, Shazia, along with other residents, were already out clearing it up.

Shazia has since indicated that she would like to get involved in any community action in her area and would encourage her neighbours to do so as well.

Mohammed Saddique (no picture supplied)

Mohammed was nominated by the police for his actions in saving the life of an elderly woman, who had been a regular customer of his taxi firm, failed to book a cab for two weeks. The now recently-retired taxi driver rang the police and went with them to the woman's home with his daughter, Farah. The woman was found in a very poorly condition and living in squalid circumstances, so was taken to Airedale Hospital by ambulance. If he had not alerted the police when he did, the woman could have died.

Police Community Support Office, Susan McLaughlin, who nominated Mohammed, said: "Mr Saddique took an interest in a vulnerably lady who had nobody else to look out for her. He is a deeply religious man who believes that regardless of religion, people have a moral responsibility to look after the welfare of others, regardless of religion and race.

"He had no responsibility for this lady but was simply concerned as her regular pattern of using the taxi company had changed and he knew there was nobody else who would be aware if there was something wrong."

In addition, during the woman's ten-day hospital stay, Mohammed and Farah both visited daily, bringing in clean clothes and food and drinks.

Paul White

Paul is a volunteer with Oakenshaw Residents' Association and despite not being in the best of health, he is responsible for planting out seven large planters with bedding plants. He ensures they always look good by tending them , as well as regularly watering and feeding them.

He was nominated by David Rhodes, who said: "His flowers always make the village look attractive. These flowers take a great deal of time and effort through the year. Almost every day they need watering."

The residents' association was set up at the end of 2006 and helps maintain a strong community spirit in the village. They are also responsible for many of the floral displays in the village, such as the planters that Paul tends.
