A SERIAL driving offender who led police on a 100mph chase down a busy 30mph road has been jailed for more than two years.

Baber Iqbal, 21, only stopped after the car he was driving flew into the air and landed on a concrete bollard.

While on bail just three weeks later, he attempted to flee police a second time, driving down a narrow street on two wheels before crashing into a parked car.

Ibqal, of Princeville Road, Bradford, was already on licence for dangerous driving at the time of his latest offences in June and July last year.

He had pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and failing to stop for police prior to yesterday’s hearing at Bradford Crown Court.

Prosecutor Abdul Shakoor told the court that around 2.30pm on June 20, police were on patrol in Poplar Grove when a blue Ford Focus driven by Iqbal flew across a junction in front of them without giving way.

A chase then ensued, with the car overtaking vehicles on the wrong side of the road and driving 200 yards along the pavement to avoid queuing traffic.

The car broke the 100mph barrier on St Enoch’s Road before reaching Smiddles Lane, where it again mounted the pavement and hit two bollards, flying into the air before crashing.

One of the pursuing police officers labelled the driving as “some of the worst he’d seen in 21 years of service”, and said had there been any pedestrians using the pavement, there “would have been a fatality”.

Police were on patrol in Huddersfield Road just after 12.30pm on July 9 when they saw a grey Skoda Octavia driven by Iqbal, who was then on bail, overtaking vehicles on the wrong side of the road towards the junction with Abb Scott Lane. A chase took place in New Works Road and Brighouse Road, where the car reached 60mph in a 30mph zone.

The chase passed over Odsal Top roundabout before Iqbal turned down narrow Wibsey Bank and got stuck behind a Ford Fiesta. He tried to overtake the car but hit a parked Transit van, causing the Octavia to fly up onto two wheels.

As he tried to regain control, he hit a parked Rover and the car came to a halt on the pavement.

Ashok Khullar, for Iqbal, said his client was capable of rehabilitation and anxious to “draw a line under his offending”.

Jailing him for 28 months and banning him from driving for four years and two months, Judge Neil Davey QC told Iqbal: “You drove at speeds of 100mph in a built-up area. You engaged in driving that put other road users and pedestrians at considerable risk. You then celebrated your release on bail by committing the exact same offences.”
