THE crackdown on bad driving in Bradford has now snared more than 6,000 motorists - with police determined to rid the city of the dangerous driving tag it is tarnished with.

Ten months on from the start of Operation Steerside, Sergeant Cameron Buchan said he was proud of the hard work of officers - but admitted they had only scratched the surface of Bradford’s problems with dangerous drivers.

The latest Steerside figures provided by police showed that 6,102 dangerous drivers had been caught by the end of Sunday - an average of 20.2 a day since the operation started on February 1.

“It is not about the numbers,” said Sgt Buchan, who is leading the operation. “However, it shows that the need for the initiative was there - and is still there as much as it was when it started.

“But we are still scratching the surface. There is so much more work to be done in clearing the name that Bradford has. It has this name and we have to clear it.

“It is not just the police, it is the Council, schools, road safety people, the fire brigade - we are all working together, all pulling in the same direction for the same goal.

“That goal is to make Bradford a safer city with better driving standards and that the name it is tarnished with to be a thing of the past.

“We want Bradford to be synonymous with good driving.”

On the number of drivers caught, Sgt Buchan said: “It shows the amount of commitment and hard work we have put into it.

“I am proud of the hard work that my staff and I have done over the past ten months.”
