POLICE have revealed their crackdown on dangerous drivers in the district - named Operation Steerside - has caught its 5,000th motorist.

The milestone has also coincided with the introduction of a dedicated police email address that the public can send information and videos of dangerous drivers.

Sgt Cameron Buchan, who is leading Steerside, said: “We have dealt with more than 5,000 motorists now and continue to strive to improve standards on the roads of the district.

“I hope the public continue to support us in this and now have the new email address to assist them in doing so: bd.steerside@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.

"We will continue to take action against drivers who deserve it.”

The operation started last February on the back of a Telegraph & Argus Stop The Danger Drivers campaign.

A total of 2,500 motorists were stopped within the first four months and its initial success promoted police to continue with it for the foreseeable future.

Politicians and a road safety group welcomed the 5,000 milestone being reached.

Bradford Council leader, Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, said: “I fully support this police initiative to crack down on anti-social driving.

"Every accident has the potential to cause lasting human misery so this kind of prevention activity is absolutely necessary.”

Shipley Conservative MP Philip Davies said he hoped the crackdown will continue into the future.

“Dangerous driving has been a blight on the Bradford district leading to tragic fatalities on occasions and also higher car insurance premiums for everyone," he said.

" I commend the police for recognising the scale of the problem and tackling it and I hope they continue to do so.”

Bradford West Labour MP Naz Shah said: “I congratulate the police on the work they have done, they don’t often get recognised for what they do.

"I’m grateful for their efforts and for the public’s effort in removing dangers from the roads and I’d encourage people to use the e-mail address so our roads continue to become even safer.”

Bradford South Labour MP Judith Cummins added: “It just shows what can be achieved when people all pull together to stop the danger on our roads.”

West Yorkshire road safety charity Brake also welcomed the police’s achievement but stressed there is still more work to be done and called for more investment to prevent crashes and casualties.

Zari’aat Masood, a spokesman for Brake said: “Investment in road safety is vital and helps to prevent crashes and casualties, which devastate families and entire communities.

"We urge the Government to keep investing in road policing, and treat it as a priority: it saves lives.”

Keighley MP Kris Hopkins and Bradford East MP Imran Hussain were not available for comment.
