A MOTORIST who tore through a busy junction in Bradford city centre on the wrong side of the road will be hunted by police.

The driver of a light blue Volkswagen Golf was caught on camera being driven along Upper Piccadilly before suddenly veering across on to the wrong side of the road on Rawson Square, at the junction with North Parade and Darley Street.

Another motorist, whose dashboard camera captured the incident, was waiting to turn right into Darley Street from Rawson Square at the time.

He said: “I thought he was going to go into us, or go into something else. He just came across the middle.

“All I know is that he was lucky there was no other cars coming the other way. He would have hit them quite hard.”

He added: “I think it is ridiculous what he did. Not only did he run a red light, he has also gone across the junction in a way that is dangerous.

“There was no way for him to get out of the way of anyone crossing the road or coming the other way.

“It was at midday in the city centre during a busy day. Anyone could have been crossing the road.

“I have never seen anything worse. There was a total disregard for anyone else.”

The motorist said his mum was in the car with him and left shaken by the incident.

“She actually screamed,” he said.

“She was shocked. We were just talking and the next thing, she screamed.”

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is leading the police’s Operation Steerside crackdown on dangerous drivers in Bradford district, said the incident would be investigated.

“We will look at the circumstances of it and see what can be done,” said Sgt Buchan. “It has happened at the top of town, where there are going to be shoppers about.

“The driver is doing a completely unpredictable and erratic manoeuvre, and on the wrong side of the road.”

The latest Steerside figures revealed that 132 drivers were caught breaking the law last week. They were made up of: speeding, 20; using a mobile phone at the wheel, 31; not wearing a seatbelt while driving, 44; driving without insurance, 16; other road-related offences, 21.

Police stopped a driver in West Bowling for using a mobile phone at the wheel and found that he was not named on the vehicle’s insurance policy. The car was one of 14 vehicles seized last week by Steerside officers.

Another car was seized after a driver who was caught speeding at 51mph in a 30mph zone in Huddersfield Road admitted having no insurance. A third seizure, in West Bowling, came after police stopped a driver for not wearing a seatbelt and found their insurance had expired.

A total of 4,487 motorists have now been caught since Steerside started in February.
