A MOTORCYCLIST could “have been killed” by the “stupidity” of a teenage motorist who came round a blind bend on the wrong side of a road in Shipley.

Dramatic footage from a van driver’s dashboard camera shows a white Vauxhall Corsa careering down Moorhead Lane, overtaking a car, narrowly avoiding the motorbike and swerving onto a grass verge before being driven off.

Councillor Hawarun Hussain (Green, Shipley) said: “The motorcyclist would have been killed if they had hit them head on like that.”

The motorcyclist, who had learner plates on his bike, was riding up Moorhead Lane when the incident happened at about 6.25pm on Tuesday.

The van driver said he caught up with the biker at traffic lights. He added: “I asked him if he was OK. He said yes, but that he was a bit shaken up.”

The van driver said the Corsa driver was “laughing and smiling” as he passed by, and added: “It is just ridiculous. This motorcyclist could quite easily have been killed.”

Cllr Hussain said: “The video clip should be used to identify the driver and the car and to take them to court for dangerous driving, overtaking on solid white lines and driving without due care and attention.

“Stupidity and selfishness like this should be punished.”

Cllr Kevin Warnes (Green, Shipley) said: “It is an absolute shocker. He has driven recklessly and dangerously down the hill on the wrong side of the road where overtaking is banned, endangering people in four vehicles.”

A police spokesman said: “Police were called about a white Vauxhall Corsa being driven erratically on Moorhead Lane, Shipley, at 6.24pm on Tuesday.

“Officers stopped the vehicle in Harrogate Road a short time later and spoke with the 18-year-old male driver, whose details were also checked.

“Police were not previously informed that camera footage of this matter existed and will now make further enquiries to establish what action can be taken.”

Mike Bristow, of road safety charity Brake, said: “The driver in this footage has shown a frightening disregard for the safety of others, and it is a miracle that no-one was injured or killed. Quite simply, this level of dangerous and illegal driving proves that the driver has no respect for the law or for other people’s lives. We need to get tough with people who drive in such a reckless manner, by giving judges the power to hand out sentences that reflect the severity of these crimes and provide a real deterrent to others.”
