A MAN tried to flee from police with a rucksack full of cannabis.

Ali Afzal, 30, was seen by officers picking up the rucksack and a jacket from a wall on the corner of West Park Road and Clement Street in Allerton, Bradford, on September 7 last year.

After a brief foot chase, Afzal, of Allerton Road, managed to escape, but he left the rucksack behind which police found contained 58 wraps of cannabis.

He appeared at Bradford Crown Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to the possession of class B drugs with intent to supply on the basis that the drugs were not his and he was trying to return them to someone else.

The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, sentenced Afzal to nine months in prison, suspended for a year, and ordered him to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and a 25-day rehabilitation requirement.
