A DRUG-FUELLED driver who leapt from a moving car during a police chase, smashing it into a garden wall, has been jailed for 12 months.

Paul Page tested over the limit for cocaine and a controlled steroid after he was arrested following a high speed pursuit round the Wibsey area of Bradford at 2am on April 9 this year.

Page, 21, of Mandale Road, Horton Bank Top, Bradford, who was driving a silver Vauxhall Corsa sped away from the police as he had no licence or insurance to drive.

Bradford Crown Court heard that officers ordered him to stop when they saw his vehicle jumping through the gears at a roundabout on Reevy Road.

It made off at speed along Wibsey High Street, Carrbottom Road and Watty Hall Avenue.

Prosecutor Caroline Abraham said the Corsa went on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend, mounted the kerb and forced a taxi to brake hard to avoid a collision.

Page and his passenger jumped out of the moving car in a cul-de-sac and it went on to hit a householder's garden wall, causing £600 damage.

Page pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance or a licence, criminal damage to the wall and driving while exceeding the legal limit for cocaine and benzoylecgonine.

He told the police he had been stupid to drive like that, the court was told.

In mitigation, Page's solicitor advocate, Tahir Hanif, said he was an immature young man who made a foolish attempt to evade capture that night.

He had been taking cocaine to deal with difficult personal issues in his life.

Page was the father of a young child and his own father was very poorly with a number of health problems.

He had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had no similar previous convictions.

Sending him to jail, the judge, Recorder Tahir Khan QC, said Page sped off from the police at speeds of more than 60mph. He narrowly avoided crashing into a taxi and then leapt from the car while it was still moving, causing it to smash into a garden wall.

He then tested over the limit for cocaine and a controlled steroid.

Page was banned from driving for two years and until he takes an extended driving test.
