PEOPLE are being warned to be on their guard against fake debt advisers operating in the district.

According to Bradford and Airedale Citizens Advice Bureau some householders have received calls out of the blue from people claiming to be CAB debt advisers. It is understood they call from mobile phones and ask people to transfer money out of their bank accounts.

“Real Citizens Advice debt advisers never ask people to transfer money into our bank account and we don’t make calls from mobiles” said Nick Hodgkinson, the debt service manager at Bradford and Airedale Citizens Advice Bureau.

“So if you are rung up by someone claiming to be from the CAB who asks you to transfer money out of your account, don’t do it.”

He added: “We do offer debt advice and we will help you decide how to deal with your debts. But we will never ask for your money. CAB advice is always free, independent, confidential and reliable. Our local Debt Advice Helpline number is 01274 758047. So if you’re suspicious about a call from someone who says they are from CAB, you can call us on 01274 758047 to check.”

For advice from the CAB about problems other than debt – eg benefits, tax credits or housing – call: 0344 245 1282.

CAB also has centres in Bradford city centre, Shipley and Keighley and runs outreach sessions too in GP surgeries, children's centres and community centres.
