THE hunt for a gunman was continuing today after a police car was shot at in Bradford city centre on Christmas Day.

The firearm was discharged into the marked police vehicle in Sackville Street causing damage to the windscreen.

A member of the public claimed the weapon used was a shotgun.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said today: "Inquiries are continuing into the discharge."

The incident has led to a warning by Nick Smart, chairman of the West Yorkshire Police Federation, that police officers are increasingly coming under attack.

No-one was in the car when the gun was fired at it. Officers had been in Sackville Street since 4.10am to deal with a report of an assault for which a 19-year-old man has now been charged.

He has also charged with possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of cannabis. He has been bailed to appear before Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court in late January, said the police spokesman.
