UNSUNG heroes from across the district are to be celebrated at an awards ceremony being held tomorrow night.

The Telegraph & Argus and Bradford Council have teamed up to acknowledge people who give up their time to improve life for the people of Bradford.

More than 70 nominations were submitted and a shortlist was drawn by a panel of leading volunteers and active citizens from across the district.

The winners of the Bradford Medal are then determined by a public vote.

The Community Stars Awards, which is in its sixth year, feature six categories, which are: volunteer, good neighbour, community group, fundraiser, community champion and young active citizen.

In addition, this year there is an extra outstanding achievement award which has been sponsored by Better Start Bradford, to recognise volunteers in the Little Horton, Bowling and Barkerend and Bradford Moor areas, who work with families with under-fours and expectant parents.

For 2016, the Community Stars Awards have been run as part of the Bradford People Can programme, a partnership campaign to promote and increase participation in volunteering and active citizenship.

Councillor Abdul Jabar, portfolio holder for neighbourhoods and community safety, said: “The Community Stars Awards is a very special event held to celebrate the amazing people who make a significant contributions to both individuals and communities.

“The winners will clearly be excellent examples of this, however, the evening also honours thousands of people across Bradford district who give their time freely in order to make a difference.”

T&A editor Perry Austin-Clarke said: “We asked the Council to partner with us on these awards because we felt there were thousands of local people doing amazing work on a voluntary basis across the Bradford district and they deserved to be given some recognition for their fantastic contributions to the local community.

“The special award the winners receive – the Bradford & District Medal – is a unique and lasting tribute not just to them but to all those unsung heroes who give so much to so many on a daily basis without ever asking for anything in return.”

The Community Stars Awards ceremony is being held at the Midland Hotel in Bradford. Admission is by invitation only.
