The Community Groups category is for people who work together for a common cause, such as members of sports clubs, community associations or mums-and-toddlers groups.

The shortlist is:

African-Caribbean Wellbeing Cafe

Volunteers at the African-Caribbean Wellbeing Cafe in Manningham help support older African-Caribbean people with mild to moderate mental health issues in the district by giving up their team each month to run the cafe.

Among their tasks are setting up the hall on the day of the cafe, running a raffle, bingo sessions and bringing prizes for the bingo, serving the elders their lunch and sitting with those that attend and talking to them as well as supporting them in any way they are able to.

In nominating the volunteers, Carol Peltier said: “The qualities of the volunteers are very special as they are totally focussed on the help and support needs of the elders. They want to give back to the community and the elders and supporting the cafe is one way of doing this.”

She added: “Everyone who comes to the luncheon club is given a warm, friendly welcome. Each volunteer gives and offers something special and unique to the cafe and to the support of the elders who attend.

“The elders look forward to attending the cafe each month as the interactions, support and encouragement given to them from the volunteers is invaluable both at the cafe and in some cases outside of the cafe in other community settings.”

Face It Together

This peer support group is run for people with dementia by people who suffer from the condition. It gives people the opportunity to meet with others who understand some of what they are going through.

Alzheimer's Society staff are on hand to offer support, allowing the members to support each other in a place where they can talk about their condition freely.

The group also proactively raises awareness in the community about the realities of living with dementia and puts forward the views of people with dementia in consultations and at public meetings.

It is made up of people who support each other to actively contribute to the community, rather than sitting at home feeling isolated, so Bradford district can face dementia together.

Nominated by Cathy Henwood, of the Alzheimer's Society, she said: "People in the group say it is the only place they feel able to really speak about their condition because they are all in the same boat. The group is very supportive of each other, no one feels embarrassed if they get in a muddle, repeat things or can't find the words to express themselves.

"This leads to people being able to talk more freely. Also members say that at home their families often get upset if they speak about their dementia."

Foxhill Brass Band

The band in Queensbury was set up two years ago by the primary school to give local children the chance to learn an instrument and perform as part of a band whatever their ability.

The school subsidises all lessons and many of the instruments used by band-members were donated.

In July the children were given a chance to perform at the Brass Tacks community concert held in the village, where the band was given the chance to play alongside the village's famous Black Dyke Band.

They have also performed for patients at Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope, giving free concerts for the benefit of residents.

Local councillor Michael Walls was being the nomination. he said: "Foxhill wanted to encourage Queensbury children to contribute to community events while continuing the tradition of Brass within the village. They rehearse tirelessly and strive to keep high standards even though children move on to new schools – hopefully taking their skills with them.”

He added: “The group are arming children with skills for life. Not just musical skills but teamwork, dedication, reliability and performance.

“Community events are beginning to benefit from the children’s participation. Our young people are being given the opportunity to be proud of Bradford and to experience the importance of giving back to the community.”
