A GROUP of women who run a "pay-as-you-feel" canteen in West Bowling have been nominated in the 2015 Community Stars Awards for their efforts to provide healthy cooked meals at a price people can afford.

The BD5 canteen, based at St Stephen's Church Hall, in St Stephen's Road, was set up by Lyn McDermott around four months ago and has been extremely busy.

Lyn, along with her sisters Rachel and Kay McDermott, open their doors every Thursday lunchtime and regularly serve up to 80 people.

The group, which runs the canteen on a volunteer basis, uses food that would otherwise go to waste, delivered to them by a similar project in Saltaire.

The women were nominated in the volunteer and community group categories of the awards by a Bradford Council warden.

The awards honour those who go the extra mile to make a difference across the district.

In nominating them, the warden said: "The cafe provides people of West Bowling a warm and welcoming environment, where anybody can come and enjoy a healthy cooked meal at a price they can afford to pay.

"These ladies literally wait on customers hand and foot and despite sometimes being rushed off their feet are always happy to help anybody.

"Every Thursday these ladies give up their own time on a voluntary basis to provide cooked meals in a welcoming environment, and especially for those people who live off a very small income, this cafe provides a healthy, low cost, cooked meal for extremely good value, with a warm and friendly atmosphere."

Lyn said: "I've been coming to the church for a quite a while and wanted to set this up in memory of my mum who always said she wanted to work with the homeless."

The 2015 Community Stars Awards are organised by the Telegraph & Argus and Bradford Council in an effort to ensure unsung heroes across the district are rewarded for their commitment.

Readers are asked to nominate deserving people and organisations in their neighbourhoods before Monday, September 28. They will then be whittled down by a panel of judges before it is back over to Bradfordians to vote for who they think is the most deserving from the shortlist of nominees.

Winners in the six categories – Volunteer, Good Neighbour, Community Group, Fundraiser, Community Champion, and Young Active Citizen – will be announced at a ceremony at City Hall on December 2, where they will each be presented with the Bradford Medal.
